Retail lives and dies by footfall — and Vastu Shastra, anciently a system for both dwellings and marketplaces, has precise ideas about the flow of customers, the posture of the cash counter, and the way goods are displayed. Shops, unlike homes, should be bright, open to movement, and generous-feeling, because movement is what buys.
Best Shop Entrance Directions
| Entrance Facing | Suitability | Best For |
| East | Excellent | Retail, restaurants, malls — the sunrise entrance draws daily traffic. |
| North | Excellent | Any money-driven trade — Kuber's direction brings customers who spend. |
| Northeast | Very good | Premium/wellness stores and flagship entrances with brand appeal. |
| West | Good | Evening-footfall businesses — cafes, opticians, service counters. |
| Northwest | Average | Travel, logistics, and importer shops — workable with constant movement. |
| Southeast | Average | Electronic or manufacturing outlets — fast, energetic trade. |
| South / Southwest | Less ideal | Heavy, constrained energy; customers feel hesitation at a south-facing door. |
Cash Counter Position
- Counter in the NE-facing direction is the classic rule — the cash counter should face North or East when you stand behind it, welcoming wealth through the front.
- Never face the counter to the main door directly. Customers should not lock eyes with the till the moment they enter; offset the counter slightly.
- The counter should not face the Southwest. Keep cash strong in N/E of the shop's interior rather than anchored heavy.
- Back of the counter: a solid wall behind the cashier's back adds the "support" posture Vastu prizes.
- Cash drawer: toward the north or east of the counter itself; keep a small mirror reflecting the door if the counter must sit west.
- Place a small coin lamp or diya near the counter and never leave the till drawer empty at close — leave a coin or token.
Display & Layout Rules
- High-value goods in the South and West — heavy, anchored stock in heavy zones; light impulse items flow toward the entrance.
- Keep the entrance passage clear — no racks in the doorway; a clear aisle into the shop invites shoppers in.
- Display the "hero" products facing south or west walls with north/east premiums at face height.
- Lighting: bright, even lighting, strongest near the counter and entry — a well-lit shop is a trusted shop.
- Mirrors: a mirror reflecting the main entrance near the counter doubles traffic visually (traditional practice).
- Plants & water: a potted money plant at the door's outer left and a small fountain or fishbowl in the NE of the shop.
- Avoid a toilet opening into the sales floor or behind the counter facing customers.
Practical Shop Remedies
- South-facing door? Add an inner step or a windchime, paint the door warm maroon, and widen the glass so light floods the entry.
- Counter trapped in the SW? Keep it spotless, bright, and add a steel/tortoise symbol facing North.
- Check whether the shop's cash counter overlaps the Brahmasthan of the sales floor — keep the centre clear of the till and heavy racks.
Shop placement mirrors the Office Vastu principles with the cash counter standing in for the owner's desk. Understand the underlying zones with the 8 Directions Guide, and plan your store layout with Create House Plan or review a current one with Analyze My House.
