Bedroom Vastu Guide

The bedroom is where you spend a third of your life. Vastu says its direction and your head position quietly shape rest, relationships, and health.

In Vastu Shastra, the bedroom should belong to the earth and air elements — stable, calm, and grounded energies that encourage deep rest. The most important shift most homes miss is putting the master bedroom in the Southwest (Nairitya), the heaviest and most stable zone of the house, while keeping the Northeast free of bedrooms entirely.

Best Bedroom Directions

RoomIdeal DirectionReason
Master BedroomSouthwest (SW)Heaviest, most stable zone — supports the head of the family and long-term stability.
Second BedroomNorthwest (NW)Good for guests or a younger son; lighter energy suits shorter ties.
Children's RoomsEast, North, or WestMorning light and fresh energy help focus, study, and growth.
Guest BedroomNorthwest or WestGuest-suitable, keeps the stable SW master bedroom untouched.
Southeast (SE)Avoid bedroomAgni (fire) zone overheats sleep and invites arguments; better as kitchen.
Northeast (NE)Avoid bedroomThe divine water zone should stay light and open; sleeping there drains energy.
South / CentralAvoidSouth is heavy earth for resting works, but central rooms cross the Brahmasthan.

If you have only one or two bedrooms, put the master in SW and use East or North for the second. Never make a bedroom in the exact centre of the house — that belongs to the Brahmasthan.

Head Position While Sleeping

The direction your head points governs how your body recharges. The classic rules:

  • Head toward South or East — most recommended. Sleeping with the head south (feet north) aligns the body with the earth's magnetic polarity and is universally praised in Vastu. Head east is second best, matching the conquest of energy at sunrise.
  • Head toward West — acceptable, though less ideal than south or east.
  • Avoid head toward North — sleeping with the head north (feet south) is the one position consistently discouraged, as it opposes natural magnetic flow and is said to cause disturbed sleep and stress.

A simple fix: re-position the bed rather than the room. If your bed cannot move, reverse the arrangement (place the bed at the opposite wall so your head ends up south or east) or at least ensure the north side of your head is protected by a headboard.

More Bedroom Vastu Rules

  • Bed under a beam: Avoid long beams or heavy fans directly over the bed — if unavoidable, add a false ceiling or canopy.
  • Mirrors: No mirror facing the bed, especially toward the feet, as it is said to disturb energy through the night; cover mirrors at bedtime if needed.
  • Electronics: Remove or unplug screens from the bedside; keep TVs in the living area.
  • Closets: Heavy wardrobes belong on the South or West wall, not on East or North walls.
  • Attached toilet door: Keep it closed at all times, especially after use and overnight.
  • Door alignment: Avoid the bedroom door directly opposite the window.

Fixing an Existing Bedroom

  • If the master room is in NE, add lightness (soft colours, plants) while strengthening the SW wall with a heavy wardrobe.
  • Colour plan: calm, warm tones — cream, sage, dusty rose — for SW and West rooms; brighter but still soft pastels for kids' East rooms.
  • Place a pair of lamps on the southwest wall and keep the northeast corner of the room completely clear.

Your bedroom direction interacts with the whole floor. Check where the room sits against the 8 Directions Guide and the 16 Zones of your house. Then run a full room-by-room check with Analyze My House or plan a bedroom-first layout with Create House Plan.
