South Facing House Vastu

Last updated:

Dakshin mukhi ghar apne aap mein ashubh nahi hai. Udaharan: paramparik Vastu mein dakshin deewar ke S3–S4 hisse ko pravesh ke liye pasand kiya jata hai; yeh vaigyanik bhavishyavani nahi hai.

Quick answer

Not bad by itself. In Vastu, a south-facing home works well when the main door is in the 3rd or 4th part (pada) of the south wall counted from the southeast corner — Vitatha and Grihakshat — and the southwest stays heavy with the master bedroom. Avoid a door towards the southwest end of the south wall.

South facing ghar kharab nahi hota — darwaza sahi jagah (S3–S4) par ho aur bhaari kamre dakshin-pashchim me hon, to ye ghar bhi shubh mana jata hai.

Is a south facing house good or bad?

South is the direction of Yama and is associated with the earth element — heavy, stable, protective. Classical texts treat a south entrance with more caution than north or east entrances, which is why many buyers hear that “south facing is bad”. In practice, a large share of Indian homes face south because of how plots are laid out, and Vastu offers clear rules for making them work. Many successful businesses and professionals in fields like administration, law and medicine prefer south-facing properties.

The two things that decide whether a south-facing house is good are (1) the exact position of the main door on the south wall and (2) keeping the southwest heavy and the northeast light inside the plan.

Main door position: the 8 padas of the south wall

Divide the south wall (from the southeast corner to the southwest corner) into 8 equal parts. Traditional Vastu names each part after a deity:

Pada (from SE)NameTraditional reading
S1AnilAverage — tends to restlessness
S2PushaAverage — workable with care
S3VitathaGood — prosperity
S4GrihakshatGood — growth, recognition
S5YamaAvoid
S6GandharvaAvoid
S7BhringrajAvoid
S8MrigaAvoid — southwest end

Example: on a 30-foot south wall, each pada is 3.75 ft. The best door zone (S3–S4) runs from 7.5 ft to 15 ft measured from the southeast corner.

For south-facing plots, Vastu prefers more open space on the north and east than on the south and west. If local building rules allow, keep the front (south) setback smaller than the rear (north) setback, and use the south side for the heavier part of the building.

South facing house plan 30x40: practical layout

On a common 30 × 40 ft south-facing plot, a balanced ground floor usually places the entrance and a small sit-out on the south side near the centre-left (S3–S4), the living room behind it towards the north-east, the kitchen in the southeast corner, the master bedroom in the southwest with an attached toilet on its western side, and the staircase along the south or west wall. Remedies for a south-facing house (no demolition)

  • If the door is in S5–S8, shift the usable door opening towards S3–S4 where possible, or use the S3–S4 opening as the daily entrance.
  • Use a raised threshold and a brass or copper strip at the door sill — a widely used traditional remedy.
  • Paint the door in warm tones (red, maroon, orange) to align with the fire and earth energies of the south.
  • Keep heavy furniture, wardrobes and the overhead water tank in the southwest.
  • Keep the northeast clean, light and open — no toilet, store or heavy stairs there.
  • Place a nameplate and good lighting at the entrance; avoid a cluttered, dark south porch.

Frequently asked questions

Is a south facing house good or bad as per Vastu?

It is not bad by default. A south-facing house is considered good when the main door is in the 3rd or 4th pada of the south wall (from the southeast corner), the southwest is heavy and the northeast is kept light.

Where should the main door be in a south facing house?

Divide the south wall into 8 equal parts from the southeast corner. The 3rd and 4th parts (Vitatha and Grihakshat) are traditionally best. Avoid parts 5 to 8, towards the southwest.

Which profession suits a south facing house?

Traditional Vastu associates south with authority and discipline; south-facing homes are often recommended for people in administration, law, medicine, police and business leadership.

Can a south facing house be corrected without demolition?

Yes. Most guides suggest using the S3–S4 opening as the main entry, a copper or brass threshold strip, warm door colours, heavy furniture in the southwest and a clean, light northeast.
