In a west-facing plan the entrance and living area naturally sit on the west. Place the pooja unit in the northeast corner of the house (the farthest point from the entrance), or in the east of the living room, so that you face east while praying. If space is tight, a wall-mounted mandir on the north-east wall is a common solution. Keep it away from toilet walls and from under the staircase.
