The main entrance is called the Pravachan Dwaar in Vastu. It is the gateway through which energy enters your home — every visitor, every morning breath, every opportunity crosses this threshold first. Choosing the right entrance direction is therefore one of the most important decisions in the entire Vastu system.
Your entrance direction is determined by which way you face when you stand inside the house looking outward. To know your entrance direction accurately, first identify North on your plot, then stand at the main door facing outward with a compass or phone compass app.

| Southeast | Average | Direction of Agni (fire). Some conflict and heat in the home; suitable for business owners if well balanced. |
| South | Fair | Yama's direction. Considered challenging for a main door, though south-facing can suit some professions. |
| Southwest | Avoid | Nairitya zone, direction of the strongest earth energy. A main entrance here is generally avoided in Vastu. |
North, East, and Northeast entrances are considered the most auspicious because of their traditional associations. A north-facing entrance is linked with wealth (the North is Kuber's abode); an east-facing entrance with health, vitality, and social success; and a northeast-facing entrance with spiritual growth and family well-being. If you cannot choose — for example your door already faces South — do not despair. Many practical remedies exist (see below), and plenty of homes with "less ideal" entrances live happily.
Remember: the plot direction and the entrance direction are different things. A "south-facing house" means the entrance is on the south side.
