Water Tank Vastu — Overhead & Underground

Overhead and underground water tanks follow opposite rules in Vastu: weight goes to the southwest, buried water to the northeast.

Quick answer

Overhead tank: southwest of the terrace is best (south or west acceptable), raised higher than other structures. Underground tank / sump / borewell: northeast is best (north or east acceptable). Avoid the southeast, the centre, and never put an underground tank in the southwest.

Overhead water tank: southwest and raised

An overhead tank holding 1,000–2,000 litres is one of the heaviest objects on a house. Vastu places weight in the southwest (Nairitya), the zone that should be the highest and heaviest in a building. A tank there is said to support stability and wealth; the same tank in the northeast — the zone that should stay lightest — is considered one of the more serious Vastu defects.

Practical rules for terrace tanks

  • Raise the tank on a platform so it is at least 1–2 ft above the parapet; the southwest should be the highest point of the roof.
  • Keep a small gap between the tank base and the roof slab to avoid seepage.
  • Prefer white, blue or light-coloured tanks; black tanks heat water and are discouraged by some practitioners.
  • Fix leaks immediately — a leaking southwest tank is considered especially unfavourable, and it also damages the slab.
  • If two tanks are needed, the drinking-water tank can be in the west and the larger one in the southwest.

Underground tank, sump and borewell

Underground water belongs in the northeast quadrant. Keep it slightly inside the boundary rather than exactly on the northeast corner line, and away from the house’s centre (Brahmasthan). A borewell follows the same rule. Avoid the southeast (fire) and southwest (earth) — digging there is traditionally linked to financial and health troubles. In apartments, the building’s sump is usually outside your control; focus on your own flat instead.

If your tank is in the wrong place

  • For an overhead tank in the northeast: if moving it is impossible, keep it on the lowest possible stand, ensure it is smaller than any southwest structure, and consider adding weight (a raised parapet or store room) in the southwest.
  • For an underground tank in the southwest: many practitioners recommend filling it and relocating the sump to the northeast when renovation allows.
  • Keep tanks clean and covered; stagnant or dirty water is unfavourable in any zone.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction is best for an overhead water tank as per Vastu?

Southwest of the terrace is best; south or west are acceptable. The tank should be the highest point of the roof.

Where should an underground water tank be placed?

In the northeast, or else the north or east. Never in the southwest, southeast or centre.

Can the water tank be in the northeast?

An underground tank in the northeast is ideal, but an overhead tank in the northeast is traditionally considered a serious defect because the northeast should stay light.

Paani ki tanki kis disha me honi chahiye?

Chhat wali tanki dakshin-pashchim me aur zameen ke neeche wali tanki ya bore uttar-purv me honi chahiye.

What colour should the water tank be?

White, blue or other light colours are generally preferred; black tanks absorb heat.
